In fact it was already being labelled as such in early '69 Fender literature. The fender line was always in flux this 1969 catalog was the last to include Fender's five string Bass V, whilst the Mustang bass (pictured on the previous page in white) was about to be reincarnated as the Competition Mustang, with it's striped body.
